Care, Not Guesswork
The Problem
People often see a message but do not reply right away, either because they are busy or still thinking. But without any signal to show what they are doing, this delay is often taken as a lack of care.

Target Context
In close relationships, silence carries emotional weight. Misinterpretation escalates from uncertainty → anxiety → relationship strain.
This behavior is significantly amplified in emotionally significant conversations, such as:
• Romantic relationships

• Close friendships

A recurring pattern emerges:
Messaging systems reduce multiple states into a single “seen” signal. Users must create their own meaning.
Competitive Analysis
Existing features like read receipts, typing, and reactions add context but remain limited. They show what is happening, not why.

This creates a gap between what is shown and what users need, forcing interpretation. Florin makes intent explicit, shifting communication from inferred meaning to expressed understanding.
Key Insights
How might we enable people to express different forms of care without relying on replies?
Design Principles
Concept Exploration
I exploration five directions. Florin was selected because it translated response states into the clearest and most consistent interaction system, while still reducing pressure and making intent more visible.
From Messages to Growth
The key idea of Florin was to make care more tangible and visible.
Instead of relying only on replies, the system reflects everyday behaviors like reading, reacting, and replying.
These actions are represented through a shared plant, where every interaction contributes to its growth.
Watering = Replying
Sunlight = Seen and thinking
Fertilizing = Lightweight reaction
Instead of treating no reply as absence, the system makes different forms of care visible.
Experience Design & Core Flow
Florin reframes communication as a gradual, shared process instead of instant exchange.
Planting
To create a new shared moment within a close relationship, users can plant a seed that grows over time. This supports ongoing connection through small interactions, rather than relying on continuous conversation.
Sunlighting
To reduce pressure around delayed responses, users can send sunlight to show they are still engaged without replying. When received, this appears as sunlight in the shared garden, signaling presence and care through visible change.
Fertilizing
To support lightweight interaction, users can send fertilizer as a quick way to acknowledge or react. When received, it appears as a subtle change in the plant, showing care without requiring a full response.
Reflection
This project allowed me to explore a different approach to communication, shifting from message based interaction to ongoing expressions of care. Working with a more illustrative interface, including elements I created myself, pushed me to think beyond traditional UI patterns and consider how visual language can convey emotion and meaning. Through this process, I learned the importance of balancing visual creativity with clarity, ensuring that the system remains intuitive while still expressing a more abstract interaction model.
